Obi is a writer, photographer and attorney. He attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he majored in Philosophy and minored in English. He later attended the John Marshall Law School, earning a Juris Doctor degree. He has worked as a criminal defense attorney representing high-profile death row inmates, several of whom were released pursuant to DNA testing. He is a member of the National Lawyers Guild. Obi is a member of the Perspectivists writers collective, the oldest continuously active writers' workshop in Chicago. He recently studied Art and Photography at Chicago State University, and became a member of the Chicago Alliance of African-American Photographers. He is also a member of the Washington Park Camera Club, one of the oldest continuously running camera clubs in Chicago. He has seven children and two grandchildren.
